MODERN HEXAGON QUILT BLOCK TUTORIAL

Digging through my fabric collection I found some pretty amazing scraps to include in my Modern Hexagon Quilt. I would call it the COVID-19 Quilt but I think that may be a bit depressing! This has to be one of the easiest patterns I have worked with of late. Probably because I designed this quilt myself and figured out the easiest way of putting it together. (tutorial included below).

I have always struggled with applique but finally have found a very easy technique which I will share with you later. Since I have not blogged in so long I thought I would get back into it with a quick intro to some of my new quilting projects and to share just how truly easy they are. I love to design so new patterns come to me quite often and I am so excited to start a new project while it is fresh in my mind. I really think it is the adrenaline rush that all quilters have when creating or maybe it is just a good dose of dopamine running through our brains…maybe both ! All I know is that creating a new design gives me quilters high lol!

I have to say that these are very trying times but my fabric collecting (some would say hoarding) was for such a time as this! I was on day five of my self- quarantine – COVID-19 and needed a new project to keep my sanity! I had wanted to attend a quilting class this month but found myself amidst a time of forced isolation with the rest of the civilized world. It’s times like these that we remember just what is really important in life (besides quilting!). I call them the three F’s – Freedom – Family – Friends and maybe one H word – Health. Well…and maybe a nice cup of tea and your favorite lotus biscuits while taking a well deserved quilting break!

BLOCK DETAILS: Each block measures 8 inches by 9 inches . You will need 56 blocks to make a lap quilt. The quilt size when finished is 56 inches by 72 inches. You will need a variety of hexagon template sizes to make this quilt. I found the easiest way to create my own hexagon templates was to go to Tim’s Printables at http://www.timvandevall.com and search for hexagon templates. Print these on white cardstock. You may need an account at Tim’s Printables but there are many templates to use for applique quilting. I used a combination of 1.5 inch, 2 inch, 3, 4 inch, and 5 inch hexagon templates.
